Home decorating, where does it begin? Where does it end? Outdoor decorating is just as important as indoor decorating. A beautifully landscaped front yard invites visitors to your home. A comfortable and relaxing back yard is a perfect spot for entertaining friends and family.

Outdoor decorating not only improves the value of your home but will also give you up to a 100% return on your investment. With just a few tips and ideas you can be on your way to enhancing your home’s curb appeal. Begin with a well thought out plan that includes landscaping, lighting, a focal point, an outdoor feature, pottery and possibly a sitting area. By thinking things out before you make purchases you can avoid costly mistakes.

The first step in your outdoor decorating project is to take a photo of the front of your house. This gives you the opportunity to look at your front yard objectively. Take the picture from the curb. Does your door stand out or blend in? Your front door is your focal point, so it should stand out. It directs your visitors and tells them where to enter your home. You can accent your front door by color and/or pottery flanking each side.

Block paving is a kind of decorative method commonly used in creating a hard standing surface to be used as a driveway or patio area. The primary benefit of block paving is that individual bricks that compose the paved surface can be lifted up and then returned in place again. This method permits remedial work to be done under the surface of a paving without visible notice to be found on the surface when the paving bricks have been put back in place. As such, this method of brick paving can be considered as flexible paving. Some typical areas of use are the driveways, town centres, pavements, patios, shopping areas and road surfacing.

Maple trees are classified under the Aceraceae family, due to the precise arrangement and shapes of their leaves. The leaves’ vibrant and varied hues make maple trees an attractive addition to any property. Over the centuries, these trees have evolved to produce clusters of flowers and small seeds, which are vital for the propagation of the species.

Sugar and Red Maple

Sugar maple is well known for its outstanding colors in fall. Its spread of 30 to 45 feet provides a spectacular and thick shade under which you can enjoy a picture perfect picnic. It can reach a maximum height of 50 to 75 feet and thrives in well-drained soils. Red maple is also known for its bright fall colors. Matured red maples have a crown shape, and its leaves can be 2 to 5 inches in width. They grow more quickly than sugar maples and do well in loam soils.

Florida and Chalk Maple

The Florida maple tree shades its leaves in hot weather and can grow up to 50 or 60 feet tall with orange or yellow leaves. It is distinguishable from other maple species by its slightly turned leaves. Florida maple can grow quickly or slowly depending on the climate and requires moist, well drained soil and plenty of sunlight. Compact soil may deter its growth. Also known as Whitebark, chalk maple is often confused as a subspecies of sugar maple; however, it is an independent species. Chalk maple can reach 25 to 30 feet in height and gets its name from the white back it attains upon maturity. These trees are easy to grow, and their leaves range from orange to yellow and deep red colors.

Owning a swimming pool in your home can certainly be a great thing for all those parties and relaxing afternoons. It’s a steep investment, but as long as you can afford it it’s definitely worth every penny. You have to remember some things though – most importantly, your expenses won’t end with the initial purchase of the pool, and you’ll need to keep paying for various things related to its use later on. That’s perfectly normal, and if you neglect this fact you may suddenly find yourself in a lot more expenses than you would be comfortable with.

Maintenance of a swimming pool is costly if it’s a large, complex one, no matter how well you take care of it yourself. There are always various things that keep coming up – filters and pumps have to be cleaned and replaced, the paint of the pool may eventually start fading and need a replacement as well, and cleaning the pool has to be done by a professional at least once in a while to ensure that nothing is clogging up the important systems. All of these things can add up quickly if you ignore them, so if you have a pool in your home, then it’s definitely in your best interest to look up a professional pool maintenance company and talk to them about hiring them for a long-term service.

Many backyards contain more than just a swimming pool so they also contain more opportunities to reduce your impact on the environment. Living the green lifestyle means taking the mantra “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, to heart. If you have a kitchen and a garden, there is an easy way to do all three R’s in one easy operation. Compost! Enjoy watching biology and chemistry in action and have a more sustainable yard. Never haul a bag of manure in the back of your car again!

Reduce: Less waste headed to already overflowing landfill sites reduces the cost and pollution associated with transporting it there. Smaller trash pickups at each house means more efficient use of garbage trucks as they don’t make as many trips from the city to the landfill and back.

Reduce: Organic waste in the landfill produces methane, a major greenhouse gas.

Reuse: There is a store of useable carbon, nitrogen and other nutrients in your kitchen waste. You can make these ready for a second harvest.

Recycle: Turning food scraps into soil to grow new food is the Circle of Life.

Curbside composting pickup is offered by more and more municipalities, particularly in Ontario. The rest of us need to do it on our own.
